Charcoal Portraits from Picture

After a few minutes rest from work, I immediately took my art materials and start painting. I loved doing portraits from photo. Typically, around 11 o’clock in the evening if I get started and sometimes it takes the morning before I decided to sleep.

Just like drawings from pencil, charcoal portraits are great. I’m glad my brother bought me a charcoal pencil in the Philippines, which is so hard for me to find in Brunei or maybe I just don’t know the exact place to buy, hmm...

Facebook is also a great help in this business. Perhaps all kind of businesses are now connected to social media, am I right? Charcoal Portraits are also great help for the family, especially, since those earnings I gained here as an overseas contract worker ain’t enough to meet all their needs. But the most important is, aside from money-making, it has also increased my efficiency in painting, can control my patience much longer, having peace of mind and freeing myself by expressing my thoughts with every stroke of my hand. (Nah! Just expressing my thoughts here, don’t take me seriously.)

This is a pure talent for me. I did not attend art classes before, I don't even have drawing lessons or art lessons but luckily GOD gave this to me. I don’t have my own studio. I’m doing it all at my bedroom. sitting on a small box, holding my 22 in x 33 in drawing board made of plywood. Well, sometimes I felt uncomfortable but as time goes by, I'm getting used to it. Besides, I’m having FUN!

The Clown in Me

I am good in playing clown all my life. Acting like nothing happens during bad days and keeping my chin up, laughing out loud and telling funny stories to them who felt sad.
But deep inside myself, I am lost, alone and lonely; A man who needed someone to take me out of the blue. Wanting someone to let me feel that I am not just a clown but a man needed to be understands and most of all, to be love.
Why could I make others feel so happy and yet I couldn't feel it for myself?

7 Steps Doodling Lion’s Face Out from a Rectangle

I'm having problem with my laptop last night and I have no other choice but to clean it up and reformatting the hard drive. Doing this technically consumes patience. Since I started late at night, I finished by 3 o'clock in the morning. And to avoid  getting stress, I took my drawing pad and pencil and do the doodle.

What is a doodle?
A doodle is an unfocused drawing made while a person's attention is otherwise occupied. Doodles are simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be abstract shapes.

Stereotypical examples of doodling are found in school notebooks, often in the margins, drawn by students daydreaming or losing interest during class. Other common examples of doodling are produced during long telephone conversations if a pen and paper are available.

Popular kinds of doodles include cartoon versions of teachers or companions in a school, famous TV or comic characters, invented fictional beings, landscapes, geometric shapes and patterns, textures, banners with legends, and animations made by drawing a scene sequence in various pages of a book or notebook.

Okay, wanna know some steps how to start doing a doodle? Just follow these simple seven steps on doodling a lion's face out from a rectangle.

Here's my doodle steps done with Photoshop just to make it easier for you to follow.

 1. Draw a rectangle.

2. Add a triangle at the bottom part inside the rectangle.

3. Draw a small triangle vertically-flipped pointing the big triangle and connect the two triangle with a line. Then draw a small isosceles trapezoid just above touching our small flipped triangle.

4. Now add zigzag pattern inside of the big triangle for the teeth.

5. Let’s add the lion’s eyes, ears and jaw. WOW! Our lion’s face now looks splendid.

6. Eight whiskers will make our lion’s face great!

7. Be a child, do the scribble! Create the mane. Do it around, circling our lion’s face. Add some fun on it and don’t stop until you satisfied on what you've done.

Don’t bother how it ends; the important is… you’re relieved being stress out and you are having FUN!

DONE! ^^

DID YOU KNOW:

The doodle designed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin of 1998 was the first Google Doodle, in honor of the Burning Man Festival. They made it to notify users of their absence in case the servers crashed. And then there was Dennis Hwang who designed the logo for Bastille Day in 2000 and  many other Google Doodles until now.

By clicking on a Google Doodle, you will directed to a string of Google search  where you can see the results about the topic.

But my most favorite Google Doodle was the Pac-Man interactive logo, shown in May 21, 2010, in commemorating the 30th anniversary of the arcade game Pac-Man. And it was the first interactive logo, created in association with Namco.

The Sketchbook that I Kept

I haven't kept any sketchbook before when I was in my elementary years. I used to draw anything I can think of at the back pages my notebooks. And it made my mother angry at me every time she saw it, when she checked my school bag at home. But that's who I am. You can't stop me doing it, most often when I am bored or even when I am excited, or even when I am with somebody on the phone.

Only one thing can stop me – "Hey! Where's my pencil?"

When I was in high school, I spend much of my money buying art materials and yes! of course – sketchbook. I can't recall how many sketchbook I've used and wasted. Some of it were forgotten and misplaced, sometimes stolen or borrowed and never returned.

I envy others which still now been keeping their sketchbooks.
I have a friend before who still had her sketchbook since preschool and another one when she had taken a fashion designers course, she used it as her illustration for fashion references. Sometimes, I got to thinking, if I keep my sketchbooks before maybe I have a dozen of it now and a lot of sketches I might shared with you.

And so I decided to get a sketchbook and a sketchpad now and promise to keep it for life. lol!

Here are few sketches I've done on my new mini-sketchpad.

Terms:

SKETCH

according to Wikipedia

is a rapidly executed freehand drawing that is not usually intended as a finished work. A sketch may serve a number of purposes: it might record something that the artist sees, it might record or develop an idea for later use or it might be used as a quick way of graphically demonstrating an image, idea or principal. Sketching is generally a prescribed part of the studies of art students.

And it is often applied to graphic works done by dry media such as graphite pencil, charcoal or pastel. It may also refers to drawings done in pen and ink, ballpoint pen, water color and oil paint. A sculptor might model 3D sketches in clay or plasticine.

SKETCHBOOK
is "a book or pad with blank pages for sketching," and is frequently used by artists for drawing or painting as a part of their creative process.

How To Use Grid Lines as Drawing Tool?

Have you tried using a grid as drawing tool for enlarging a picture? If not, well let me share it why you should. It can be very helpful because it allows you to focus on one block of the picture at a time. So why pay for those expensive grid drawing tutorials when you can learn the same technique on your own for free. I learned using a grid for drawing when I was in grade school and till now it is the easiest technique I’m getting use to. From simple to delicate project, grid drawing can be used for almost any project and it is easy for the beginner to try.

I will teach you how to use grid as a tool for drawing on this post. But first, we have to prepare the following materials:

and of course, our reference picture.

Step 1: Draw a grid on the reference picture. (I’m using 1cm is to 1.5 inches ratio (ratio: 1 cm : 1.5 in) for that reason, reference picture will be scaled 1 centimeter per line distance.)
